Alitalia (Linee Aeree Italiane) is the national airline of Italy. Alitalia started operations on 5 May 1947 as Aerolinee Italiane Internazionali, with its first flight between Turin and Rome. Alitalia carried over 10, 000 passengers in its first year purely on domestic journeys. The following year Alitalia made its first international flight travelling between Italy and several cities of South America. On 31 October 1957 Alitalia merged with Linee Aeree Italiane and took on the name of Alitalia Linee Aeree Italiane but has since been more commonly known as Alitalia. Prima and Magnifica Class

Prima class is Alitalia's business class on medium-haul flights. Prima offers business travellers a level of comfort and service that equals Magnifica class on long-haul flights. All seats are ergonomically designed and have plenty of legroom allowing a pleasant and relaxing journey. Alitalia have removed a number of seats on most aircraft to increase space and comfort. Prima passengers can also take advantage of exclusive check-in areas and have access to Alitalia's VIP lounges.

Magnifica class is Alitalia's premium service on long-haul, intercontinental, flights. Magnifica class combines ergonomic comfort with the finest wines and the best gastronomic fare that Italy has to offer. Magnifica cabins feature an electronically controlled seat, a seat back that reclines up to 60 degrees depending on the aircraft and an extending footrest for sleep position providing optimum comfort on long-haul flights. Up to five feet of legroom between each seat gives the cabin a feeling space and ensures each passenger has ample room to spread out. Award winning gourmet meals artfully combine the finest Italian ingredients to produce an exquisite dining experience. Alitalial has been a member of the SkyTeam Alliance since 2001. SkyTeam began on 22 June 2000 by Aeromexico, Air France, Delta Air Lines and Korean Air. Since then other airlines such as CSA Czech Airlines, Alitalia, Continental, KLM and Northwest have also joined the alliance with more on their way to becoming members. There are also affiliated airlines such as Air Europa, Copa Airlines, Kenya Airways and Tarom. Aeroflot and China Southern Airlines have both signed an MOU taking the first step towards membership.
